Three different families, three different homes and three very large power bills.

We'll tell you which of your everyday appliances chew up the most power and how you can track the amount of energy you're using, to avoid nasty bill shock at the end of winter.

Here are some of the energy saving tips from the experts A Current Affair consulted:

- For a family of four, it can cost more than $235 a year for running a plasma television. By upgrading to a new 7-star LCD television, you can save up to $210 a year.

- Using a small plug-in heater for just 90 days can set you back a whopping $378 a year.

- Upgrading to a more energy efficient clothes dryer can save you about $64 a year, if you use your dryer three times a week.

- Replacing halogen downlights with LED lamps can save you hundreds of dollars annually.

- Turning off appliances overnight, rather than leaving them in stand-by, is a sure-fire way to cut energy consumption.

- You can have an energy auditor come to your home, often free of charge.
